Welcome to Saint Francis of Assisi Kitchen
St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen provides hope and compassion to our community.
Located in downtown Scranton, the Kitchen serves over 225 hot nutritious meals each and every day of the week.
Anyone who comes to our door is welcome – without question or qualification.
Since the Kitchen first began in August 1978, we have served over 2.2 million meals.
In the Catholic tradition and the spirit of our patron, St. Francis of Assisi, the hungry are fed in collaboration with volunteers and donors from all faith communities. The Kitchen provides a free, hot, nutritious meal to all our guests everyday of the year. Staff and volunteers strive to be of assistance to others and serve with a spirit of compassion, respect and dignity.
St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen relies entirely on the collaboration of individuals, groups, and corporations to continue in its mission of feeding the hungry. We accept donations of monetary gifts, prepared and non-perishable food items, kitchen supplies and volunteer service. We encourage strong community involvement to help support the future of the Kitchen and to enable us to meet the needs of the growing number of poor and hungry men, women and children in our area. With the continued generous support of business, civic, and religious groups and concerned individuals within the community, our mission will continue to be realized.
Host for a Day Program
In order to ensure the daily operation of the Kitchen, the Board of Directors conducts an annual campaign soliciting contributions of $100 or more. A donation of $100 or more helps provide the daily meal. Each contributor becomes a “Host for a Day” and is recognized during meal service. As the “Host for a Day,” you may select a specific date for the meal you are sponsoring, and we strongly encourage you to join us that day in serving the meal. Meals can also be sponsored in honor or memory of another person or persons if you so choose.
At the "Host for a Day" Appreciation Reception, from left: Msgr. Joseph P. Kelly, Kitchen executive director; Judy Cosgrove, who was honored for her efforts as campaign chairperson; Bishop Joseph C. Bambera, who was recognized for his continuing support of the Kitchen’s mission; and Atty. John Kennedy, Kitchen board president.
